Day 3 - Historic Cities

Start your day visiting the Roseburg Visitors Center and pick up brochures that describe things to see around Roseburg and the Land of Umpqua. Include in your tour a stop in Roseburg Town Center, which offers an assortment of shops, art galleries and antique stores. Try one of the local restaurants for your dining pleasure. View the murals on some of the buildings in Town Center, and pick up the brochure on the history of the “blast” that leveled eight blocks in downtown Roseburg in 1959, when a truck carrying a two-ton load of dynamite and four and one half tons of ammonium nitrate exploded. Be sure to stop at the Umpqua Valley Arts Center, located in the original 1917 Veterans Administration building on Harvard Avenue. View the galleries and visit the gift shop in this restored building located on the grounds of one of Roseburg’s city parks. Other cities to explore include historic downtown Oakland. This town was originally established around a grist mill in 1851. Today, the 1880s historic brick buildings remain and house a museum, antique shops, and a restaurant that includes an old-fashioned ice cream parlor and fine dining section. In the city of Canyonville you may stop at the city park and visit the Applegate Trail kiosk that tells the story of the early settlers traveling south through the canyon toward California in the 1850s. Stop at the Pioneer-Indian museum and learn more about the history of the area. Explore some of the shops in downtown or have lunch at a local restaurant. While in the area, you may want to drive to the Milo Covered Bridge, which spans the South Umpqua River. The Oregon Winter Driving Guide click here to download pdf file
