Drive Highway 138 from Sutherlin and head west. Take a break in Elkton and visit the Brandborg Winery tasting room. Go across the street and pick up some bakery goods for your visit to the beach. Continue west crossing through the Coast Range where you will eventually follow the main Umpqua River to the ocean. Just before the town of Reedsport, be sure to stop at the Dean Creek Elk Viewing area. Here you will have an excellent opportunity to see a herd of wild elk. Upon entering Reedsport, stop at the Discovery Center where you can learn more about the local and natural history. Stop at the Visitors Center at the junction of Hwy 38 and Hwy 101, and then it’s off to explore the Oregon Dunes National Recreation area or the Umpqua Lighthouse just south of Reedsport. Plan on having fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants in Salmon Harbor area at Winchester Bay. Depending on your time, you can return to Roseburg by the way you came, or for a longer loop trip head south on Hwy 101 and return to Roseburg by way of Hwy 42. If you chose this route, you should make a side trip from Coos Bay to the rocky headlands of Cape Arago and the beautiful formal gardens at Shore Acres. During December, Shore Acres is decorated with a fantastic festival holiday light show. The Oregon Winter Driving Guide click here to download pdf file
