Are you ready to climb the Callahans? This series of sandstone crags made up of broken cliff-bands and large boulders sits 1500 vertical feet above the beautifully treed landscape of the Flournoy Valley, just 25 minutes west of Roseburg. There are more than 200 climbing routes ranging from beginner to expert in the Umpqua Basin - 233 to be exact according to local rock climbing expert and author Greg Orton. The Callahan Mountains encompass 100 of those climbs.
The Youtlkut Pillars, east of Roseburg, sit at elevation of 4000 feet and offers climbers a volcanic multi-columnar crag with documented and undocumented routes. Recorded routes have fixed anchors at the top with climbs ranging from 5.6 to 5.9. All the cracks of this 100 foot pillared face give climbers a chance to make their own routes or try one known to previous climbers.
